Three-peat! Lady Trojans Take Tourney Title In OT

MOUNT OLIVE, N.C. -- Anderson University scored the first five points of overtime and held on to beat Barton College 83-80 in the women's CVAC Tournament championship game Saturday afternoon. "We talked about our goal of winning the regular-season championship then making a statement with a clean sweep by winning the tournament," said Anderson head coach Jeff Dow. "We wanted to leave no doubt about who the best team in the CVAC was this season." Anderson has now won three consecutive CVAC Tournaments and will make its third straight trip to the NCAA Division II Tournament next week. Anderson, 26-4 overall, took a 71-70 lead with 14 seconds remaining in regulation on a basket by LaShonda Chiles. After Barton missed a shot, Deidra Langston was fouled by Barton's Keauna Vinson with seven seconds remaining. The foul was Vinson's fifth, which opened the door for Anderson in overtime. "Vinson is such a great offensive rebounder," Dow said. "She averaged 10 offensive rebounds in the two games here. When she fouled out, that made it easier inside for us." Langston made the first free throw and missed the second and Barton's Kim Butts scored with one second remaining to tie the game at 72 and send it to overtime. In the overtime period, Haley Riffle scored on a putback at 4:16 and Keana Boyd made a 3-point basket at 3:42 to give Anderson a 77-72 lead. "It was neat to see some kids step up like Haley, Keana, and Mikala (Fogle-Wilson)," Dow said. The Bulldogs, 23-7 overall, got within three points three times in the next two and a half minutes but could get no closer. A basket by Chiles at the 1:18 mark pushed Anderson's lead back to five -- 83-78. The game featured 13 lead changes and five ties. Anderson trailed 23-10 at the 11:33 mark of the first half, but the Lady Trojans battled back to tie the game at 31 with 2:16 to play. A 3-point basket by Fogle-Wilson at the buzzer gave Anderson a 36-34 halftime lead. "We got to a slow start," Dow said. "They were driving to the basket, getting offensive rebounds, and we weren't hitting anything. After Mikala's three, it was back and forth. Both teams were sound defensively and on the boards. I think the shooting percentages were a tribute to both defenses." Anderson was led by Chiles with 25 points, eight rebounds and five assists; Deidra Langston with 22 points and Fogle-Wilson with 17 points. "LaShonda is an incredible competitor," Dow said. "Pound for pound, she is the toughest kid in this league. She kept making big shot after big shot in the second half and overtime. We're very disappointed she didn't get player of the year in the league, but she's 3-for-3 as CVAC Tournament MVP." Chiles was named the tournament MVP, and Chiles, Langston, and Latrice Thomas all were named to the all-tournament team. Barton placed five players in double figures -- Vinson with 17, Candice Britton with 15, Anjessa Evans and Kim Butts with 14 apiece, and Jo Denevan with 13. Vinson, who fouled out late in regulation, had 23 of Barton's 47 rebounds. Anderson finished the game with 42 rebounds. From the field, Barton shot 46 percent and Anderson shot 44 percent. Anderson scored 23 points off 21 Barton turnovers. "It's exciting to be going to the NCAA Tournament for the third year in a row," Dow said. "There were a few people who said we couldn't do it with a new coach and missing three starters. But everyone on this team stepped up and made it happen. I am very proud of this team."
