Lady Trojans Beat Back St. Andrews Upset Bid

ANDERSON, S.C. - Anderson University rallied from a 10-point deficit with 8:46 remaining to beat St. Andrews Presbyterian College 87-78 in a CVAC women's game Saturday afternoon at the Abney Center. Anderson, 21-4 overall and 16-2 in the CVAC, led by a single-digit margin most of the first half until a 7-1 run by St. Andrews to close the first half gave the Knights a 36-34 lead at the break. St. Andrews, 11-13 and 9-9, snapped a tie at 45 at the 14:43 mark with a 12-2 run for a 57-47 lead with 9:59 to play. Marquita Prichard scored six points during the run for the Knights. Trailing 62-52 with 8:46 left, the Lady Trojans started their rally. An 18-3 run gave Anderson a 70-62 lead with four minutes remaining. Nine points of the run came at the free throw line and Mikala Fogle-Wilson capped the run with a 3-point play. A 3-point goal by Crista Henderson and a basket by Prichard cut the Anderson lead to 70-67 with 3:02 left. But Anderson made 13 free throws in the final 2:26 to end St. Andrews' upset bid. Anderson, ranked No. 3 in the East Region, saved itself at the free throw line. The Lady Trojans shot just 32 percent from the field, but they made 38 of 45 from the line. The 38 free throws is a season high. The previous high was 32 against District of Columbia on Jan. 9. Anderson outscored St. Andrews by 23 points at the free throw line. The Knights committed 31 fouls and four of St. Andrews' nine players fouled out. Deidra Langston led Anderson with 27 points and 14 rebounds. She was 13-for-15 from the line. LaShonda Chiles scored 22, and Fogle-Wilson had 21 off the bench. Chiles, a junior from Greenwood, S.C., has scored in double figures in 70 straight games and needs just 24 points to reach 2,000 for her career. Henderson tallied 21 to lead St. Andrews, while Prichard finished with 18. St. Andrews shot 45 percent from the field. Anderson finishes the regular season 12-0 at home.
