Glenville Escapes AC Upset Bid, 72-71

CALIFORNIA, Pa. -- A jump shot by LaShonda Chiles with eight seconds remaining bounced away to allow Glenville State to escape with a 72-71 victory in the semifinals of the East Regional Saturday night at Hamer Gym. Glenville, 29-3 and ranked fifth in the country, advances to Monday night's regional final against the winner of the California, Pa.-Barton semifinal. Anderson's most successful season as a four-year program ends at 25-7. "I could not be more proud of this team," said Anderson head coach Kevin Pederson. "I will take these 12 players against any team in the country. We got down 14 and everybody thought we were going to quit. It wasn't good enough just to be here. We expected to win." The entire game was a struggle for the Lady Trojans. Anderson suffered 13 turnovers in the first half and trailed 37-25 at the break. "We knew turnovers were going to be a problem because they're such an unbelievable defensive team," Pederson said. "There's something there about that team that you can't describe. They did a great job against us." A jumper by Glenville's Tracy Wyatt gave the Pioneers a 53-39 lead with 11:49 remaining and it looked as if the Lady Trojans were finished. But Pederson got out of the zone and went to a man-to-man and the game started shifting in Anderson's direction. Glenville's lead stayed in the 10-point range until the seven-minute mark when the Lady Trojans surged into the lead with a brilliant 16-5 run. A layup by Chiles cut the Pioneer lead to 67-60 with 4:52 to play. While Glenville was struggling to find the basket, Leann Segers, who came off the bench to score a team-high 17 points made a free throw and Deanna Thompson canned a 3-point goal to pull Anderson within four - 68-64 - with 3:50 left. Segers, last season's CVAC Freshman of the Year, was 6-for-9 from the field and had one assist and one steal in 19 minutes. "We always feel good about putting Leann in the game," Pederson said. "She was a big reason we had a chance to win at the end." A layup by Chiles and another 3-point goal by Thompson capped the Anderson comeback as AC took a 69-68 lead with 2:47 left. It was Anderson's first lead since midway through the first half. Two free throws by Rachel Redick put the Pioneers back in front 70-69 with 2:28 left. The Pioneers then got a layup from Redick for a 72-69 lead with 1:42 left. But the Lady Trojans got a layup from Segers to make it a 72-71 game, and then got the ball back with 28 seconds remaining when Wyatt was called for an offensive foul. After a timeout, the Lady Trojans decided to go for the win. Chiles dribbled, made a move at the top of the key, and launched a 17-foot jumper with eight seconds remaining. The shot bounced high off the iron and then bounced away. The Lady Trojans were not able to recover the ball before the final horn sounded. "When it left my hand, I thought it was good," Chiles said. Anderson was led by Segers with 17, and Thompson, Chiles, and Decole Shoemate, playing her final game for the Lady Trojans, with 12. Katie Wimer led Glenville with 23 points. Redick added 19 for the Pioneers. Anderson shot 46 percent from the field to 43 percent for Glenville. Glenville's Carrie Triplett had a game-high 12 rebounds. The loss snapped a 13-game winning streak for the Lady Trojans. Anderson's 71-point output was its lowest output since its winning streak began on Feb. 9.
