Lady Trojans Will Play For CVAC Title Saturday

DUE WEST, S.C. - Deidra Langston scored 20 points and LaShonda Chiles and Deanna Thompson added 18 apiece to lead Anderson College to a 99-79 victory over Belmont Abbey in the semifinals of the 2004 CVAC Tournament Friday afternoon. Anderson, 23-6 overall, advances to its first-ever CVAC tournament championship game Saturday. The Lady Trojans will face Coker, which upset top-seeded Barton in the other semifinal. The winner will receive an automatic bid to the NCAA Division II Tournament. The loss, Belmont Abbey's third of the season to Anderson, drops the Crusaders to 19-10. Langston, an All-CVAC honorable mention pick, was 9-for-12 from the field and 2-for-2 from the line in 19 minutes. Chiles, a first-team All-CVAC selection, was 8-for-10 from the field and 2-for-2 from the line. Anderson took the lead less than two minutes into the game and never looked back. Trailing 3-2, the Lady Trojans went on a 30-13 run for a 32-16 lead with 10:44 left in the half. Decole Shoemate scored 10 of her 17 points during the run. The Lady Trojans have won 11 straight and are now 20-0 when they score 80 or more points. Anderson led 49-39 at the half and went on a 10-0 run to open the second half for a 59-39 lead. Langston scored four of the five baskets made during that run. A 3-point goal by Kim Hausman, a jumper by Chiles, and a putback basket by Shoemate increased Anderson's lead to 71-46 with 12:39 to play. Anderson's largest lead of the game - 27 points - came with 7:17 remaining when Langston scored off an assist from Thompson to give the Lady Trojans an 81-54 lead. In addition to her 18 points, Thompson had 10 rebounds, six assists, and four steals. Shoemate also had six assists and three steals. Hausman and Ponds added 11 points apiece for Anderson. Hausman also had three of Anderson's eight blocks. Belmont Abbey was led by Nicole Woods with 17 points. For the game, Anderson shot 58 percent from the field while limiting Belmont Abbey to 33 percent. The Crusaders shot less than 35 percent from the field in both halves.
