AC Women To Face St. Andrews In Second Round

ANDERSON, S.C. -- The Anderson College women's basketball team will open play in the 2004 CVAC Tournament Wednesday when St. Andrews comes to the Abney Center for a 7 p.m. second-round game. Anderson, 21-6 overall, earned a first-round bye by finishing second in the CVAC standings. St. Andrews, seeded seventh in the tournament, defeated 10th-seeded Queens (N.C.) 79-72 Tuesday night. Reaching 20 victories was a first for AC's four-year program and a first for head coach Kevin Pederson, who also earned his 50th career victory this season. AC split with St. Andrews during the regular season. On Jan. 10, LaShonda Chiles scored 24 points to lead Anderson to a 90-60 victory over the Knights at the Abney Center. But St. Andrews won the rematch in Laurinburg, N.C., 68-64 on Feb. 7. Since that loss, Anderson has reeled off nine straight victories by an average margin of 18.7 points. Wednesday night's winner will advance to Friday's semifinals at Erskine College in Due West, S.C., to face the winner of the Lees-McRae-Belmont Abbey second-round matchup. AC swept both Lees-McRae and Belmont Abbey during the regular season. During its current winning streak, Anderson has scored less than 80 points just once -- at Lees-McRae (75-66) on Feb. 23. Anderson is 18-0 this season when it scores 80 or more points and finished the regular season 11-1 at home. Through games of Feb. 29, the Lady Trojans were third in the nation in scoring at 84.8 points per game. They also rank 13th in the country in field-goal percentage at .466. Anderson is led by freshman LaShonda Chiles, who averages 18.2 points per game. Four other Lady Trojans also average in double figures -- Stephanie Ponds 11.8, Leann Segers 11.2, Deidra Langston 10.8, and Decole Shoemate 10.0. Chiles ranks 10th in the nation in free-throw percentage (.871) and 42nd in points per game. In Sunday's regular-season finale against Queens (N.C.), the Lady Trojans made 16 3-point goals and shot 48 percent from behind the arc. Freshman Kim Hausman came off the bench to make eight 3-point goals on her way to a career-high 26 points.
