DUE WEST, S.C. - LaShonda Chiles of Anderson College was named the 2003-04 Carolinas-Virginia Athletic Conference Freshman of the Year and first-team All-CVAC during the league's basketball banquet Thursday night at Erskine College. Chiles, a 5-foot-2 freshman from Greenwood, S.C., averaged 18.1 points, 5.3 rebounds, 3.9 assists, and 2.0 steals to lead Anderson to a 21-6 regular-season record. She scored in double figures in 23 of 27 regular-season games, scored 20 or more points 11 times, and topped 30 points twice. She scored a career-high 34 points against Queens (N.C.) on Feb. 29. She was ranked among the nation's leaders in free throw shooting for most of the season. In 905 minutes during the regular season as Anderson's main ball handler, Chiles had 102 assists to 66 turnovers. Chiles is the fifth Anderson athlete to be selected Freshman of the Year. Teammate Leann Segers was CVAC Freshman of the Year last season. Chiles is the first first-team selection in women's basketball for Anderson since Regina McCoy was named to the first team in 1998-99. Chiles will lead Anderson into Friday's 4 p.m. semifinal against Belmont Abbey at Erskine's Galloway Center. The other members of the first team were Kelly Lamotta and Keauna Vinson from Barton, Deanna Lady from Lees-McRae, and Shamae Hemmingway from Coker. Vinson was named CVAC Player of the Year. The coach of the year was Wendee Saintsing from regular-season champion Barton.
