Lady Trojans Snap Back To Beat Abbey, 95-88

ANDERSON, S.C. - Anderson College rallied from a 15-point deficit in the final 12 minutes to snap a three-game losing streak and pull out a dramatic 95-88 victory over Belmont Abbey in a CVAC game Monday night at the Abney Center. The first half featured four ties and four lead changes, but Belmont Abbey managed to scratch out a 48-45 halftime lead. In the first eight minutes of the second half, the Lady Crusaders went on a 24-12 run for a 72-57 lead with 11:44 remaining. Belmont Abbey made five 3-point goals during the run, two by Valorie Bennett. But Anderson, 13-6 overall and 8-4 in the CVAC, mounted a frantic comeback led by Stephanie Ponds and Deidra Langston to seize an 80-79 lead with 3:01 left. Ponds had 10 points during the run, and Langston had five points, including the two free throws that gave Anderson the lead. A field goal by Decole Shoemate and two baskets by Langston increased AC's lead to 86-79 with 1:26 left. In the final 1:04, Shoemate made seven free throws and Langston scored the final basket of the game on a break away to seal Anderson's fourth straight victory over the Lady Crusaders, 12-8 and 9-4. The Lady Trojans shot 68 percent in the second half (19-28) and finished the game at 61 percent from the field. Anderson has scored 90 or more points seven times this season. Anderson placed four players in double figures. Ponds and LaShonda Chiles scored 22 points apiece, Langston added 21, and Shoemate finished with 15. Three 20-point scorers in the same game is a first for Anderson's four-year program. Belmont Abbey was led by Nicole Woods with a game-high 31 points. Anderson has won six of its last seven against Belmont Abbey. Led by Ponds and Deanna Thompson with seven rebounds apiece, AC won the boards, 39-27. Anderson was 20-for-25 from the free throw line, while Belmont Abbey was just 9-for-12. Belmont Abbey made 15 3-point goals to just three for Anderson.
