Lady Trojans Ready For First-Round Game

CALIFORNIA, Pa. -- The Anderson College women's basketball team held its final workout Thursday morning in preparation for its NCAA Division II East Regional first-round game against West Liberty State Friday at 1 p.m. The Lady Trojans, 24-6 overall, practiced for 55 minutes in the Hamer Gym on the campus of host California of Pennsylvania. "We're excited about the opportunity," said Anderson head coach Kevin Pederson. "We know we're the underdog coming in, so West Liberty State has all the pressure on them. They have to prove that they're better than we are. We're ready to show them that we can compete with them." Both teams enter Friday's game on a roll. The Lady Trojans have won 12 straight by an average margin of 18.2 points per game. West Liberty State (26-4) has won 12 of its last 13. The Toppers beat Glenville State 59-58 to win the West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference title last Saturday. West Liberty State depends on the 3-point shot. The Toppers, who average 76.9 points per game, have made 292 of 768 from behind the arc this season. In contrast, Anderson, which averages 85.3 points per game, has made 197 of 578 attempts from behind the arc this season. "You've got two talented offensive teams," Pederson said. "They shoot the ball better than anybody and we're third in the country in scoring. I expect a high-tempo game and that's good for us." West Liberty State, the third seed in the regional, is led by Ashlea Bland, who averages 19 points per game, and Tara Johnson, who has made 115 3-point goals this season. Of her 291 field-goal attempts, Johnson has launched 262 shots from behind the arc. Two other WLS players - Kelly West and Dana Levendoski - have made 54 3-point goals apiece. "We've got to hold them under their average from the 3-point line (10 per game)," Pederson said. "Then we've got to play our game. If we play our game, we believe we will win." Anderson, the sixth seed in the regional, has five players who average in double figures - LaShonda Chiles (18.4), Stephanie Ponds (11.6), Deidra Langston (11.3), Leann Segers (11.0), and Decole Shoemate (10.4). Chiles, a 5-foot-2 native of Greenwood, S.C., was the CVAC Freshman of the Year and the MVP of the CVAC Tournament. In their first 30 games, the uptempo Lady Trojans shot 47 percent from the field while limiting the opposition to 39 percent. The remainder of Friday's schedule is West Virginia State vs. Glenville State at 3 p.m., Pitt-Johnstown vs. Barton at 6 p.m., and Charleston (W.Va.) vs. host California (Pa.) at 8 p.m. The winner of the Anderson-West Liberty State game will play the winner of the West Virginia State-Glenville State game at 6 p.m. Saturday. The East Regional features two top-five teams. California (Pa.) is ranked third, and Glenville State is ranked fifth in the latest WBCA Division II poll. "Our team is very grounded, and we haven't gotten caught up in the hoopla," Pederson said. "We understand why we're here. I think we're focused and ready to play. It's a great opportunity for our school to make a statement nationally. We've worked hard to get here. We want to be in the national top 25, then once we get there, we want to stay there."
