ANDERSON, S.C. - Designated hitter Kera Croteau provided an RBI single in the top of 10th and Megan Elliott won a duel of freshman pitchers to lead Carson-Newman to a 2-1 victory in the second game and a sweep of Anderson College Monday afternoon at Smethers Field. In the first game, Carson-Newman scored two unearned runs in the first inning and got a two-run homer from Erin Rutherford in the sixth inning on its way to a 4-0 victory. Carson-Newman is now 2-0, while Anderson falls to 4-6. The second game was a duel between Elliott and Anderson freshman pitcher Lauren Powell. Neither team scored through the first eight innings. In the ninth, pinch runner Lauren McKaig beat a throw home on a ground ball to give the Eagles a 1-0 lead, but Anderson answered in the bottom of the ninth when Kari Huggins drove in Caroline Rochester with a single. In the tenth, Carson-Newman had runners at first and third with two outs when Croteau connected for her first hit of the game. In the bottom of the tenth, Anderson got the potential tying run to third, but Elliott picked up a shot back to the box and ran down PJ Taylor for the second out. With runners on first and second, Rochester, who played most of the doubleheader with an ankle injury she suffered early in the first game, grounded out to end the game. Elliott allowed just three hits, struck out four and walked four. Powell allowed six hits, struck out six, and walked six. Carson-Newman also got a strong pitching performance in the first game from Marci Mitchell. Mitchell allowed just three hits in seven innings, struck out six, and walked just one. The Eagles used a walk and two throwing errors by Anderson pitcher Kelly McCrodden to score two runs in the first inning. But from that point, McCrodden held Carson-Newman in check until the sixth. Crouteau led off with a single and was followed by Rutherford, who hit a blast over the left center field fence. The only player with a multi-hit game in the doubleheader was Carson-Newman's Cristi Benton, who had two hits in the second game. Carson-Newman's Lisa Rogers walked five times in five trips in the second game. Game One Game Two Season Statistics
