Softball Team Dominates Newberry

NEWBERRY, S.C. - Anderson College's pitching was strong in both contests and the Lady Trojan offense came alive in game two as AC swept the Lady Indians of Newberry 1-0 and 13-1 in a doubleheader at the Newberry College Softball Complex on Friday afternoon. Anderson continued its dominance over Newberry, extending its consecutive games won streak to six over the Lady Indians, and by earning the victory in the second game in just six innings. Anderson (3-3) just got by in the first game. In the top of the fifth inning with the game scoreless, left fielder P.J. Taylor bunted for a hit to lead off the inning. She advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Katie Howard, stole third and came home on a throwing error by Newberry third baseman Lucki West. The run was unearned against hard luck starter Kayce McLeod, who took the loss (0-4). McLeod struck out one and walked one, allowing just five hits in the game. Anderson starter Lauren Powell was just short of brilliant in her outing, tossing a one-hitter with five strikeouts, but allowing five walks in the game. No Newberry runner touched third base in the first contest. Both teams scored in the first inning of the second game. Anderson got things started with three hits and two runs, while Newberry added an unearned run on a pair of hits and an error. Newberry (2-6) did not score again versus AC starter Kelly McCrodden, who allowed four hits and two walks, while striking out three in her six-inning performance. After scoring two runs in the first, Anderson got two more in both the second and fourth innings and added one in the fifth. The Lady Trojans then blew the game open with six runs in the sixth on just three hits. Anderson drew two walks and hit into four fielder's choices with only two of them resulting in an out. Taylor was a perfect 4-for-4 from the plate, while center fielder Angela Hauff and second baseman Caroline Rochester both were 4-for-5 at the plate. Rochester had five RBI in the second game. No Newberry players had multi-hit games, but shortstop Ashleigh Anderson did have the hit in game one and a hit in game two. The Lady Trojans start an eight-game homestand Sunday afternoon, when the Trojans host Presbyterian College in a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
