Softball Team Splits With Blue Hose

ANDERSON, S.C. - Jana Waters led off the second game with a home run and Jamie Vining provided a two-run double in the second inning to lead Presbyterian College to a 10-5 victory and split of a doubleheader Sunday afternoon at Smethers Field. In the first game, Anderson jumped out to a 5-0 lead through four innings and held on for a 5-3 victory. Anderson is now 4-4, while Presbyterian stands at 9-11-1. In the first game, Anderson scored two runs in the first inning on RBI singles by Caroline Rochester and Carolyn Smith. The Lady Trojans added a single run in the second on a one-out double by Shelly Sawyer and two errors. Anderson increased its lead to 5-0 in the fourth on singles by Lauren Powell and Sawyer, a fielder's choice, a sacrifice fly by Angela Hauff, and an RBI single by Cindy Crosby. Presbyterian used two walks, a fielder's choice, and an outfield error to score two runs in the fifth. PC scored one more run in the seventh on a home run by Katie Fite. Anderson freshman Lauren Powell went the distance in the first game. She allowed four hits, struck out 11, and walked six. Presbyterian opened the second game by scoring seven runs in the first two innings. Waters had two hits, one RBI, and scored two runs in the first two innings. Anderson contributed to Presbyterian's hot start by committing three errors and throwing one wild pitch in the second inning. Anderson cut the Presbyterian lead to 10-5 in the fifth when Carolyn Smith rapped a two-run double, but the Lady Trojans could get no closer.
