Third Time Not The Charm For The Trojans

MISENHEIMER, N.C. -- For the third time in less than two weeks, the Pfeiffer Falcons managed to hold off an inspired effort by Anderson College. Pfeiffer, the top-seeded team in the 2005 CVAC Tournament, had to survive a late Anderson rally to beat the Trojans 85-76 in the quarterfinal round of the 2005 CVAC Tournament Wednesday night. Pfeiffer 24-4 overall, led by 17 -- 67-50 -- with 8:31 and was cruising before Anderson crawled its way back into the game. The Trojans went on a 20-7 run to cut the Falcon lead to 74-70 with 2:23 to play. John LeSueur, who led Anderson with 22 points, made two 3-point goals and one field goal, Osvaldo Haynes made six free throws, and J.R. Howell made one trey during the run. After Damien Argrett, who led all scorers with 27 points, scored two consecutive baskets, Howell scored a layup for Anderson to make it a 78-72 game in favor of Pfeiffer. A 3-point goal by Howell got Anderson within four -- 80-76 -- with 28 seconds remaining but Anderson would get no closer. Combined, LeSueur and Howell were 14-for-24 from the field and 9-for-18 from behind the arc. Pfeiffer beat Anderson three times this season by an average margin of 7.3 points. Qamar Hasan added 20 points and Jason Emerson scored 11 for the Falcons, who advance to Friday's semifinals at Limestone College in Gaffney, S.C. Howell tallied 17, Haynes scored 16, and Randy Javois added 10 for the Trojans. The loss ends Anderson's season at 10-18. Anderson shot 62 percent in the second half to finish the game at 52 percent. Pfeiffer shot 47 percent from the field. Anderson had nine 3-point goals to six for Pfeiffer. Both teams attempted 22 shots from behind the arc. Pfeiffer won the boards, 37-26, and scored 27 points off 22 Anderson turnovers. Box: Pfeiffer 85, Anderson 76 2004-05 Final Season Statistics
