MARS HILL, N.C. -- The Mars Hill College Lions avenged an earlier loss at Anderson College Saturday afternoon by defeating the Trojans 76-52 in Stanford Arena. Anderson beat MHC 78-70 in Anderson, SC, on Nov. 17. The Lions, 2-3 overall, converted on 78.9% (15-19) of their shots in the first half to pull away with the win. The loss, Anderson's third straight, drops the Trojans to 1-3. The game was close for the first eight minutes. Mars Hill took the lead for good at 18-15 with 12 minutes left in the first half after Walt Baxley hit a 3-pointer. The Lions biggest lead of the first half came with just 12 seconds left after Chris Aline hit a couple of foul shots to give Mars Hill a 39-22 lead at the intermission. Mars Hill went on a 10-2 run to open the second half to open up a 25-point lead with 17:11 remaining. Jeremiah Tinch hit a layup for the final basket of the run. Anderson fought back and cut the Lions' advantage to 15 points -- 51-36 -- after Odin Palacio hit a shot from behind the arc. But that was as close as the Trojans would get. The Lions quickly reeled off six points to gain a 20-point lead -- 57-37 -- with 10:29 remaining. Mars Hill scored 38 points off 27 Anderson turnovers, scored 10 points off the break, and received 43 points from their bench. After shooting 44.4% (12-27) in the second half, The Lions ended up converting on 58.7% (27-46) of their total field goals in the game. The Lions shot 52.9% (9-17) from behind the arc. Anderson won the rebound battle 32-28. The teams combined for 52 turnovers in the contest. The Lions defense limited Anderson to just to 36 percent from the field. Baxley led all scorers with 23 points. He was 9-for-13 from the field and 5-7 from 3-point range. Tinch and Reggie Johnson followed for MHC scoring 13 and 12 points in the game, respectively. Baxley and Tinch both recorded five rebounds to lead Mars Hill on the boards. Chris Poore led Anderson with 15 points and four rebounds.
