Trojans Shut Down Belmont Abbey, 58-44

ANDERSON, S.C. -- Anderson College limited Belmont Abbey to 33 percent from the field, 23 percent in the second half, to take a 58-44 CVAC victory over the Crusaders Thursday night at the Abney Center. Anderson, 5-6 overall and 3-2 in the CVAC, limited Belmont Abbey to just two field goals in the final 10 minutes of the game. The Crusaders averaged just 0.68 points per possession. Anderson has limited three opponents this season to less than 40 percent from the field. A 3-point play by Ronald Bowers gave Anderson a 49-40 lead with 6:50 remaining. The Crusaders got no closer than seven points the rest of the way. The Trojans were led by Osvaldo Haynes with 17 points and 16 rebounds. Bowers added 12 points and six rebounds, and Chris Poore chipped in 10 points. Anderson had 16 assists on 23 baskets. Haynes and Alfred Boykin had four assists apiece. Haynes also had three of Anderson's five blocked shots. Belmont Abbey's leading scorer was Rafael Moreira with 17 points. The Crusaders had just four players score and got zero points off their bench. Led by Haynes, Anderson dominated the boards, 43-27. Anderson used an 11-4 run to close the first half to take a 29-28 lead at the break. Haynes scored two baskets and Bowers contributed a 3-point basket during the run.
