LAURINBURG, N.C. -- St. Andrews Presbyterian College rallied from a five-point deficit in the third overtime to beat Anderson College 94-87 in a CVAC game Saturday afternoon. The Knights, 7-5 overall and 1-4 in the CVAC, trailed 83-78 with 3:16 remaining in the third overtime after a 3-point goal by Anderson's Chris Poore. A field goal by Ronald Bowers gave Anderson an 85-82 lead with 2:14 remaining, but from that point, the Trojans would score just one more basket. Two free throws by Mike Smith cut the Anderson lead to 85-84 with 1:54 remaining, and the Knights took the lead for good on two free throws by Bobby Short with 1:41 left. A dunk by Chad Eichelberger increased the St. Andrews lead to 88-85 with 55 seconds left. The Knights made six free throws in the final 28 seconds to seal their first CVAC victory of the season. The loss drops Anderson to 5-7, 3-3. The three-overtime game is the longest game the Trojans have played since joining NCAA Division II in 1999. Anderson led 24-23 at the half. But the Trojans need some heroics from Odin Palacio to send the game to the first overtime. Palacio made two 3-point goals in the final 38 seconds, the second one with three seconds remaining, to end regulation at 59-59. After two free throws by Taiwon Grooms tied the game at 69 with 24 seconds remaining in the first overtime, the Trojans had a shot to win the game, but Poore's jumper with two seconds remaining bounced away. In the second overtime, Grooms made two free throws with 1:15 left to give the Knights a 76-73 lead, but Poore drained a 3-pointer with 41 seconds remaining to tie the game at 76. Anderson also had the last shot in the second overtime, but J.R. Howell could not connect on a 3-point attempt. Eichelberger and Smith led the Knights with 19 points apiece. Grooms finished with 17 points. Eichelberger also was St. Andrews' leading rebounder with 12. Anderson was led by Osvaldo Haynes, who recorded his second double-double of the week with 21 points and a game-high 14 rebounds. Palacio finished with 19 points, Poore tallied 18, and Bowers chipped in 15. Anderson shot 41 percent from the field to 38 percent for St. Andrews. The free throw line was a major factor in the game. St. Andrews was 29-for-35 from the line, while Anderson was 13-for-23. Box: St. Andrews Presbyterian 94, Anderson 87 3OT Season Statistics
