Barton's Key Scores As Time Expires To Beat AC

ANDERSON, S.C. -- Barton's Jacoby Key scored off an assist from Robert Pinder as time expired to give the Bulldogs a 74-73 victory over Anderson College Saturday afternoon at the Abney Center. Barton, 6-4 overall and 2-1 in the CVAC, trailed 73-72 after Anderson's Chris Poore converted a 10-foot jumper with 16 seconds remaining. After Casey Moore missed a jump shot, Pinder claimed the rebound and called a timeout with 1.7 second remaining. Pinder took the pass on the inbounds pass and whipped the ball to Key at the opposite side of the lane. Key laid the ball in at the buzzer. There were four lead changes and one tie in dthe final 1:34 of the game. Barton, 6-4 overall and 2-1 in the CVAC, led by 11 -- 59-48 -- with 9:07 remaining. But Anderson, 4-5 and 2-1, put together a 16-6 run to slice the Barton lead to 65-64 with 2:49 to play. After an exchange of 3-point goals, Odin Palacio scored a layup to give Anderson a 69-68 lead with 1:34 left. A free throw by Key tied the game at 69, but the Trojans retook the lead a 71-69 on a putback by Randy Javois. Barton got the lead back at 72-71 on a free throw and a putback basket off a missed free throw by Moore. Moore led all scorers with 30 points. He was followed by Key with 15 and Alejo Barovero with 13. Anderson placed four players in double figures. Javois had 19 points, Poore scored 15, and Alfred Boykin and Osvaldo Haynes tallied 13 apiece. Barton shot 50 percent from the field in the first half (15-30) and second half (13-26). Anderson shot 53 percent in the second half to finish the game at 46 percent. Haynes was the game's leading rebounder with 10, but the Bulldogs won the boards, 39-34. The Bulldogs made just 12 of 21 from the free throw line, but they outscored the Trojans by seven points at the line. Barton won the bench-scoring category, 16-7.
