Trojans Keep It Close But Can't Gun Down Falcons

ANDERSON, S.C. -- Damien Argrett scored 20 points and DeMario Grier and Rico Grier scored 17 points apiece to lead Pfeiffer past Anderson College 72-62 in a physical CVAC game Thursday night at the Abney Center. Anderson's largest deficit of 15 points -- 48-33 -- came with 16:37 remaining in the game. But Pfeiffer could not put Anderson away. The Trojans benefited from some poor long-range shooting by the Falcons -- 0-for-11 from behind the arc in the second half -- to stay in the game. Anderson, 9-14 overall and 7-10 in the CVAC, whittled the Pfeiffer lead inside double digits four times before making one final push late in the game. A field goal and a 3-point basket by John LeSueur and a 3-point basket by Alfred Boykin cut the Pfeiffer lead to 66-61 with 1:23 remaining. But after Odin Palacio was called for a foul battling for a rebound with 43 seconds remaining, the Anderson bench was hit with two technical fouls. The Falcons, 20-4 and 15-2, made all six free throws and managed to escape Abney still hanging on to a share of first place in the CVAC. Anderson was led by Osvaldo Haynes with 19 points and eight rebounds before fouling out midway through the second half. LeSueur added 16 points and Boykin tallied 11. LeSueur has come off the bench to score in double digits in five straight games. Anderson shot better than Pfeiffer -- 42 percent to 40 percent -- and committed one less turnover (13) than the Falcons. Pfeiffer scored 17 points off turnovers to 16 for Anderson. But the Trojans made just 7 of 13 free throws, while the Falcons made 20 of 23. Led by Haynes' eight rebounds, Anderson won the boards, 39-34. Haynes, a 6-foot-7 senior from Greenwood, S.C., has led Anderson in rebounding in eight straight games. Box: Pfeiffer 72, Anderson 62 Season Statistics
