Haynes Leads Anderson Past Coker, 74-68

ANDERSON, S.C. -- Osvaldo Haynes scored 23 points and grabbed 18 rebounds to lead Anderson College to a 74-68 victory over Coker in a CVAC game Monday night at the Abney Center. The victory improves Anderson to 7-9 overall and 5-5 in the CVAC. Coker now stands at 5-12, 3-7. Haynes, a senior from Greenwood, S.C., has recorded double-digit rebounds in seven of his last nine games and has pulled down a total of 55 rebounds in Anderson's last four games. He has nine double-doubles this season. Haynes' 23 points ties his career high. Coker jumped out to a 20-6 lead in the first eight minutes of the game, but Anderson outscored the Cobras 26-12 during a 10-minute span to tie the game at 32 with 1:49 left in the first half. Fifteen points during the Anderson run came from the free throw line. The free throw line was the biggest difference in the game. Anderson, which entered the game shooting just 59 percent from the line, shot 81 percent (27-33) from the line while Coker was just 6-for-8. A total of 24 personal fouls were called on the Cobras while just 12 fouls were called on the Trojans. Coker led 34-32 at the half, but a layup by Chris Poore and a basket by Alfred Boykin gave Anderson a 38-34 lead with 17:58 remaining. From that point, there were eight lead changes in the next five minutes. Layups by Randy Javois and Haynes gave the Trojans a 51-48 lead with 11:12 to play. Anderson never trailed again but a barrage of 3-point baskets by Coker kept the game close down the stretch. Anderson pushed its lead to 65-56 with 2:52 remaining, but Coker made four treys in the next two minutes, three by Jamie Jenkins, to cut the Anderson lead to 70-68 with 30 seconds left. But John LeSueur and Haynes made two free throws apiece in the final 24 seconds to seal the victory for the Trojans. Randy Javois, was was 6-for-6 from the line, followed Haynes for Anderson with 18 points. Jason Fulwood, who was 4-for-6 from behind the arc, scored 17 points to lead Coker. Abram Ludd chipped in 10 for the Cobras. Anderson had 18 assists on 22 baskets. Boykin had seven of Anderson's assists. Boykin also had three of Anderson's eight steals.
