Mount Olive Hangs On To Beat AU

MOUNT OLIVE, N.C. -- Mount Olive fought off a late Anderson University rally to beat the Trojans 68-60 Saturday afternoon. Mount Olive, 21-6 overall and 15-5 in the CVAC, led 39-31 at the half and by 10 -- 50-40 -- with 13:48 remaining. Anderson, 4-23 and 4-16, rallied to cut the deficit to three -- 63-60 -- with 1:56 remaining. But that's where the AU comeback stalled. Four Mount Olive players scored in double figures -- Brandon Streeter 15, Justin Melton 12, Elijah Rouse 11, and Elton Coffield 11. Anderson was led by Nate Russell, who scored a game-high 25 points. Russell was 10-for-15 from the field and 3-for-4 from behind the arc. He also handed out seven of Anderson's 15 assists. Both teams struggled from the field. Mount Olive shot 38 percent, while Anderson shot 37 percent. Rouse was the game's top rebounder with 10. Mount Olive won the boards, 43-24. Mount Olive outscored Anderson by eight points at the line, and the Mount Olive bench outscored the AU bench, 28-9. Anderson will open play in the CVAC Tournament on the road Monday night.
