ANDERSON, S.C. -- Newberry outscored Anderson 15-3 in the final 3:40 to pull out a 68-56 victory over the Trojans Saturday afternoon at the Abney Center. Newberry, 4-4 overall, trailed 36-34 at the half, but the Indians used some hard-nosed defense to build a 49-43 lead with 10:52 to play. Anderson, 1-7 overall, refused to buckle. The Trojans outscored the Indians 10-4 to tie the game at 53, the 10th tie of the game. Drew Keenan scored two baskets during the rally. In the next 1:40, the Indians scored seven points to take control of the game. Clemente Martin scored a putback and two free throws for four of the seven points. After a 3-point basket by Keenan cut the Newberry lead to 60-56 with 1:43 remaining, the Indians closed out the game with an 8-0 run. Six of Newberry's final eight points came at the free throw line. Newberry was led by Martin with 17 points and eight rebounds and Zach Chandler with 11 points. Led by Terrance Spiller's nine rebounds, the Indians dominated the boards, 42-21. Newberry's rebounds were equal -- 21 off the offensive board, 21 off the defensive board. Newberry scored 28 points in the paint, while Anderson scored just four. Anderson was led by J.R. Howell with 19 points, 16 in the first half, and John LeSueur with 12. Newberry shot 48 percent in the first half and 43 percent for the game. The Trojans shot 55 percent in the first half but slumped to 28 percent (7-25) in the second half to finish the game at 40 percent. There were 11 lead changes and 10 ties in the game. Eight of the lead changes came in the first half. The largest lead for either team in the first half was seven by Newberry -- 34-27 with 4:35 to play.
