ANDERSON, S.C. -- A 3-point attempt by Anderson University's John LeSueur bounced away as time expired to allow Erskine to escape with an 82-80 victory in a CVAC game Monday night at the Abney Center. Erskine, 6-7 overall and 3-5 in the CVAC, led 36-31 at the half and 10 points - 62-52 - with 10:13 to play. Anderson led just once in the opening minute of the game and there was just one tie at 30 with 3:27 remaining in the first half. But the Flying Fleet could never pull away. Erskine's lead was never larger than seven points in the final 9:48, and Anderson got within one point twice. Trailing 62-52, Anderson put together a 9-0 run led by Nathan Russell, who finished with a career-high 31 points. Russell converted a three-point play and had two more baskets to score seven of the nine points. Russell was 13-for-18 from the field. The Fleet answered with three free throws and a 3-point goal by Jay Boulware to pump its lead back to 68-61 with 5:58 to play. After a 3-point goal by Russell cut the Erskine lead to 76-73 with 1:53 to play, the Trojans got a defense stop. LeSueur got a look at a tying 3-point goal during Anderson's next possession but could not convert. A 3-point goal by J.R. Howell sliced the Erskine lead to 81-80 with 11 seconds remaining. After Brandon Wright made one of two free throws with eight seconds remaining, the Trojans rushed down the floor. LeSueur got the ball on the left wing, fumbled it for an instant, but managed to get off a 3-point attempt that bounced off the rim. The Fleet had five players in double figures -- Wright with 21 points, Matt Odom and T.J. Taylor with 14 apiece, Drew Wallace with 13, and Boulware with 12. Following Russell for Anderson were LeSueur and Howell with 15 points apiece. Erskine was 15-for-34 from behind the arc, 9-for-18 in the second half. Wright made five treys, and Odom made four. LeSueur made four 3-point goals for Anderson, 2-11 overall and 2-5 in the CVAC. Erskine shot 48 percent from the field, while Anderson shot 45 percent. Taylor had five of Erskine's 19 assists. Even though Erskine pressed most of the game, Anderson committed just nine turnovers. Box: Erskine 82, Anderson 80 Anderson University Men's Basketball Statistics
