Late Anderson Rally Nips Belmont Abbey

BELMONT, N.C. -- Anderson University rallied from a seven-point deficit in the final seven minutes to beat Belmont Abbey 52-49 in a CVAC game Monday night at the Wheeler Center. J.R. Howell drilled a 3-point basket with 27 seconds remaining to cap the Anderson comeback. The Trojans, 4-21 overall and 4-14 in the CVAC, trailed by as many as 11 points in the first half and nine points in the second half. But a 3-point basket by Nathan Russell gave Anderson its first lead of the game -- 47-46 -- with 2:54 to play. A basket by Anderson's Drew Keenan tied the game at 49 with 1:32 remaining and set the stage for Howell's game-winning shot. The winning basket was Howell's only points of the game. The victory gives Anderson a regular-season sweep of Belmont Abbey, 6-18 and 6-12. The Trojans beat Belmont Abbey 70-66 on Dec. 2. Anderson was led by Russell with 19 points, John LeSueur with 14 points, and Levi Ashworth with 10. Belmont Abbey's Anthony Bell led all scorers with 23 points. Sidney Hoff added 15 for the Crusaders. Anderson shot 55 percent in the second half and 42 percent for the game. Belmont Abbey shot 38 percent in both halves. Belmont Abbey was 13-for-19 from the line, while Anderson was just 2-for-5. Anderson's bench outscored the Belmont Abbey bench, 14-6.
