WINGATE, N.C. -- Wingate improved its record to 3-1 with an 83-61 victory over Anderson University in a non-conference game Monday night at the Cuddy Arena. The Bulldogs were led by Sean Barnette with 18 points, Bill Smith with 15 points and seven assists, and Sam Holmes with 14 points. During the game, Barnette surpassed the 1,000-point plateau for his career. Barnette now has 1,012 career points during his two-plus seasons at Wingate. Smith set the tone early for Wingate, scoring all 15 of his points in the first half as the Bulldogs built a 35-26 lead at the break. Smith gave the Bulldogs their biggest lead of the first half when he hit a three-point field goal at the 4:45 mark. Smith's trey made the score 28-17. Barnette scored his 1000th point from the free-throw line, hitting two-of-two with seven minutes to go in the first half. The Bulldogs pulled away in the second half, thanks to 50 percent shooting (15-of-30) after intermission. Wingate scored the first seven points of the second half, taking a 42-26 edge on a Holmes three-pointer at the 18:29 mark. The Trojans did not get the deficit below 10 points the rest of the way. A jumper by Anderson's J.R. Howell cut the margin to 54-44 with 11:18 to play in the contest. Wingate answered Howell's basket with a 14-0 flurry to take a 68-44 lead with 8:02 remaining. Both Barnette and Holmes had five points each during the 14-0 run for the Bulldogs. Holmes had 12 of his 14 points after halftime. Anderson's John LeSueur led all scorers with 22 points. LeSueur was 4-for-8 from behind the arc. The loss drops Anderson to 0-4. Anderson's next game is Thursday at Limestone.
