Trojans Beat Belmont Abbey For First Victory

ANDERSON, S.C. - John LeSueur scored 21 points and Anderson University held off a late Belmont Abbey rally to beat the Crusaders 70-66 in a CVAC men's game Saturday afternoon at the Abney Center. The victory was the first of the season for the Trojans, 1-5 overall and 1-2 in the CVAC. LeSueur, a 6-foot-2 senior from Blountville, Tenn., was 5-for-10 from the field and 8-for-9 from the free throw line. J.R. Howell added 15 points and Levi Ashworth chipped in 10 for Anderson. Belmont Abbey was led by Anthony Bell with 22 points. Bell scored 16 of his 22 points in the first half. Brooks Beard added 14 and Sidney Hoff had 11 for Belmont Abbey. Belmont Abbey, 2-5 and 1-2, built a nine-point lead in the first half, but a 13-6 run by Anderson in the final five minutes of the half cut the Crusader lead to 35-33 at the break. After three ties in the first nine minutes of the second half, the Trojans put together a 20-10 run for a 67-57 lead with 4:17 remaining. LeSueur scored six points and Howell made two 3-point goals during the run. The Crusaders made one final push. Four free throws and a 3-point goal by Patrick Kuhlman sliced Anderson's lead to 68-66 with 49 seconds remaining. But that is where the Belmont Abbey rally ended. Two free throws by Drew Keenan with nine seconds remaining sealed the game for Anderson. Anderson shot 46 percent in the second half and ended the game at 41 percent.
