Wingate Runs Past Trojans For A Second Time

ANDERSON, S.C. -- Wingate placed four players in double figures on its way to a 92-71 victory over Anderson University Wednesday night at the Abney Center. Wingate, 6-1 overall, claimed its second victory of the season over Anderson. The Bulldogs beat the Trojans 83-61 at Wingate on Nov. 27. Wingate was led by Bill Smith with 19 points. Smith was 6-for-8 from the field and also had four assists and four steals. Following Smith for the Bulldogs were Sean Barnette with 17 points, Justin Baker with 12 points, and Kenny Villines with 11. Wingate shot 59 percent from the field in the first half on its way to a 50-25 halftime lead. The Bulldogs finished the game at 51 percent from the field while limiting the Trojans to just 32 percent. Wingate outscored Anderson in the paint, 50-24. Anderson made just 7 of 34 attempts from the field in the first half. J.R. Howell was the leading scorer for Anderson with 17 points. Howell was the lone Anderson player in double figures. Led by Villines, who had 12 rebounds, the Bulldogs won the boards, 50-40. After six ties and five lead changes, Wingate took the lead for good at the 12:14 mark of the first half. In the final 12 minutes of the first half, the Bulldogs outscored the Trojans, 35-11. The loss drops Anderson to 1-6. Anderson got no closer than 21 points in the second half.
