GAFFNEY, S.C. -- Sophomore Dan Bowers scored his first game-winning goal of the season in the 108th minute to lift Anderson past Limestone, 2-1, in Conference Carolinas soccer action Thursday night at Saints Field. The game was a defensive battle through the first half with neither team able to put the ball in the net. Coming just two days after the Trojans battled top-ranked Lees-McRae to a 1-1 draw, a fatigued Trojan's squad fell behind at the 64:37 mark when Limestone's Ali Benson put a shot past AU keeper Lukas Hesse. Anderson freshman Jorgen Halls notched the equalizer at the 77-minute mark, his third score of the season that he played off the Saints keeper. Bowers could not have picked a better time to score his first career goal as a Trojan, as the Summerville, S.C. native made a hustling play in the second overtime. His initial attempt was turned away by Saints' keeper Mark Davidson and as Davidson tried to corral the ball, Bowers' second effort nudged the ball through the pipes. "We were exhausted," said Anderson head coach Rob Miller. "We played everyone that made the trip. It was a gutty hard-working effort and a huge win." The Trojans held an 18-12 advantage in shots, including an 8-4 edge in shots on goal, with 11 of the attempts coming in the second frame. The Saints posted six corner kicks, while AU recorded five on the night. Anderson improved to 11-1-2 overall and 5-1-2 in the league, while Limestone fell to 9-4 and 6-2 in conference play. Four of AU's five matches in the month of October have gone to double overtime, with the Trojans winning three and notching the draw versus Lees-McRae. With two conference matches left in the season, fourth-place Anderson will get back on the pitch Saturday, when the Trojans visit fifth-place Coker as the two teams battle for seeding in the conference tournament. Kick-off in Hartsville is scheduled for 4 p.m. at the Coker Soccer Field. Game Stats Season Stats
