Fifth-Seeded Cobras Hold Off Trojans

ANDERSON, S.C. -- Using a goal in each half, the fifth-seeded Coker men's soccer team got past No. 4 seed Anderson, 2-1, in quarterfinal round action of the Conference Carolinas men's soccer tournament Tuesday night at the AU Soccer Field. Just over a week ago the Trojans upended Coker, 2-0, in Hartsville and tonight's rematch was a physical contest with a combined 24 fouls called and six yellow cards issued. Coker improved to 11-5-2 on the season and advances to meet top-seeded Lees-McRae, an 8-0 winner past eighth-seeded St. Andrews earlier tonight in Banner Elk, N.C. Earlier this season Coker dropped a 3-1 home decision to Lees-McRae. The Trojans fell to 12-3-3 and will have to wait until Monday, Nov. 9, to discover if they have been selected to receive a bid to the NCAA Tournament. The two teams posted a total of just 14 shots in the defensive battle, with Coker freshman Eric Stiefield giving the visitors an early lead when AU keeper Benjamin Pepion and defender Rayon Markland appeared to collide, giving Stiefield an open look at the Trojans' net from just beyond the right corner of the box in the fifth minute of action. Neither team was able to capitalize on their minimal opportunities for the rest of the frame and the Cobras went to the half holding a 1-0 edge. Sophomore Ryan Messick found teammate Kevin Butler with a feed for the equalizer at the 48:54 mark from almost the identical spot of the CC goal in the first half and the re-energized Trojans gained the momentum and forced most of the action on the Cobra's half of the pitch for most of the second half. Unfortunately for AU, Coker's Tyler Senecal worked open and found the back of the net with the game-winning score in the 65th minute. "We struggled mentally tonight," said Anderson head coach Rob Miller. "We did not finish our chances when we created them and didn't play well defensively." Anderson held a 9-5 advantage in shots, including 5-2 in the second half, and a narrow 3-2 edge in corner kicks, as the Trojans' home undefeated streak was halted at 19 matches. Freshman James Sweeney went the distance in goal for Coker, collecting two saves, while Pepion started for AU but was injured in the 61st minute and was replaced by freshman Lukas Hesse. Pepion was credited with one save on the night. Game Stats Season Stats
