Late Goal Propels Trojans Past Lander

ANDERSON, S.C. -- In the third match of a season-high four-game homestand, the Anderson Trojans (9-1-1) needed two overtimes to dispatch the Lander Bearcats (4-4-1) with 2-1 victory Wednesday night at the AU Soccer Field. The win was the second straight double overtime victory for the Trojans and extended their home unbeaten streak to 17 matches. "I thought we played well and that's a great win," Trojans' coach Rob Miller said. "It was two good teams with a lot of passion that love the game. It was back and forth, and we played as well as we've played in a while." With 3:33 remaining in the second overtime period, Anderson's Ryan Messick (Point Pleasant, W.V.) scored the game-winner. Ben Jones played a ball into the box, and Messick's shot slipped past the diving Lander keeper as the Trojans' bench erupted. "(Ryan) just had enough pace on it that the keeper had a tough time handling it and we poked it away," Miller said. "With 19 shots eventually something has got to go for you, and that wasn't even our best chance, but I thought that was just a gutty goal." With 20:50 remaining in the first half, Anderson's Paulo Passini (Belo Horizante, Brazil) broke the scoreless tie. Lasse Sohrweide (Flensberg, Germany played the ball into the box, and Passini chipped it past the charging Bearcats before hitting into the back of the net. Lander had an opportunity to tie the match with a minute remaining in the first half, but Aldo Lopez-Gil (Toronto, Canada) found himself in the right place at the right time. Lander's Alex Pethick had a look at an empty net after a corner kick, but Lopez-Gil got a foot on the ball and cleared it to stop the tying goal. The Bearcats tied the match with 8:27 remaining in the second half on a penalty kick by Adam Arthur. Arthur was taken down in the box by a Trojans' defender and hit a low shot that slipped past diving Anderson keeper Benjamin Pepion (Denton, France). Anderson had three opportunities in the first overtime period but was unable to capitalize with a game winner. Mark Smith (London, England) and Jorgen Hals (Krageroe, Norway each had shots go wide, and Paulo Passini's laser sailed just over the crossbar. The match was back and forth for the opening 20 minutes, with each team having several chances that were off the mark, but from that point on the Trojans took control from that point on. Lander had four shots in the opening 20 minutes and finished the game with only 9 total shots. The Trojans ended the game with 19 shots on goal. The Trojans are back in action on Saturday, when AU jumps back into Conference Carolinas action by playing host to Lees McRae, with kick-off scheduled for 7 p.m. in the second match of a women's/men's doubleheader.
