Men's Soccer Celebrates Homecoming with Win

ANDERSON, S.C. -- The Anderson men's soccer team continued its four-game winning streak Saturday, with a 4-2 win over the St. Andrews Knights in Conference Carolinas play on Saturday at the AU soccer field. The Trojans got on the board early, as junior Zach Denson played a beautiful ball off a corner kick that was headed into the net by Rayon Markland just 10 minutes into the game. However, it was the Knights that got off to a quick start in the second half as junior Chris Weedon was able to put one past Anderson goalkeeper Benjamin Pepion just 30 seconds into the half. The Knights followed that goal up when Tamas Szalai caught Pepion out too far, and was able to chip it over the Trojans' keeper's head. The Trojans were down 2-1 when senior Paulo Passini started what would be a flurry of goals from the Trojans. With 15 minutes to go in the game, Passini was able to head in a goal that was assisted by sophomore Lasse Sohrweide. Just two minutes later James Moseley scored his first goal of the season, when he was able to boot a pass from teammate Kevin Butler past the Knights' goal keeper. Finally, Mark Smith put the game away as his left footed blast made the score 4-2. Smith's goal was also assisted by Sohrweide. In all, the Trojans scored three goals in less than seven minutes of play. "I thought we were not very focused early," said Anderson coach Rob Miller. "We weren't ready to go early on, but we played really well in the last 20 minutes of the game." Anderson improved to 11-1-1 on the season and 5-1-1 in Conference Carolinas, while St. Andrews fell to 3-9 overall and 1-6 in league action. The Trojans outshot St. Andrews 21-7 and held a 13-0 advantage in corner kicks. Anderson will put its 18-match home unbeaten streak on the line Tuesday when the Trojans play host to top-ranked and undefeated Lees-McRae, with kick-off scheduled for 6 p.m. at the AU Soccer Field.
