ANDERSON, S.C. -- The Anderson men's soccer team got back on the winning track Wednesday with a 4-1 win over the Belmont Abbey Crusaders in Conference Carolinas action Wednesday night at the AU Soccer Field. The win snapped a two-game winless streak that saw the Trojans (7-1-1, 3-1-1) lose to Pfeiffer and tie with Erskine. The Trojans, who are off to the best start in at least the last decade, ran its home unbeaten streak to 15 matches by downing the Crusaders. "We had two tough games in a row and we needed a game to pick it back up. We started a little flat but we picked it up in the second half and looked like ourselves again," Anderson head coach Rob Miller said. "That's a good team, and to beat them 4-1 is a good result." With the Trojans leading 1-0 at halftime, Paulo Passini wasted little time extending the margin to two goals. Passini made a great individual move to get around a Crusaders' defender in the box and his left-footed shot sailed past the diving keeper and found the back of the net. The Crusaders cut the margin back to one goal midway through the first half with a score by James Lawrence Forbes, putting pressure on the Trojans. But Anderson responded to the threat a minute and a half later to put the game out of reach. Jorgen Hals (Krageroe, Norway) scored on a right footer that crossed in front of the goal and snuck inside the far post. "I think the key was that we responded to them scoring, and I think we need to be tested with that kind of pressure," Miller added. Morten Thorsen (Sannidal, Norway) added an insurance goal with 2 minutes remaining for the final 3 goal margin. Anderson's Ben Jones (Cincinnati, Ohio) fielded a cross from Hals at the 14:21 mark of the first half and hammered the ball past the Crusaders' keeper to give the Trojans a 1-0 edge. Both teams had several first half shots that went wide, and each team had hard struck shots that were stopped by the opposing keeper. Lasse Sohrweide's (Flensberg, Germany) shot midway through the half missed the mark, and Belmont Abbey's Devon Purslow fired a laser that was stopped by Anderson keeper Benjamin Pepion (Denton, France). Anderson briefly steps out of league play when the Trojans play host to North Greenville Friday night at the AU Soccer Field. Kick-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
