Trojans Win Second Straight, Top Mars Hill

ANDERSON, S.C. -- The Anderson mens soccer team celebrated its home opener with four players notching goals in the its home opener as the Trojans raced past Mars Hill, 6-1, Saturday night at the AU Soccer Field. Anderson (2-0) controlled the tempo from the outset, pressuring the Lions early and often in the contest. The Trojans' persistence paid dividends when freshman Clement Samson took an assist from teammate Paulo Passini and dropped the ball past MHC keeper Alex Huckabee for his first career goal as a Trojan with just over nine minutes gone in the contest. Samson's first attempt six minutes earlier was foiled by the Lions' defense. Passini followed with a shot of his own less than a minute later, but Huckabee collected the attempt for his second save early in the contest. With most of the action on the MHC side of the pitch, the Trojan's capitalized again when senior Rayon Markland followed junior Zach Denson's corner from the right side with a shot that found the back of the net at the 22.25 mark and proved to be the game-winner. Less than two minutes later, Passini would not be denied again as the native of Brazil collected a corner kick from Adrien Moufflet and rifled an acrobatic shot past Huckabee for AU's third goal of the opening frame. It was Passini again at the 27:56 mark, grabbing an assist from teammate Jorgen Hals and putting the contest out of reach on a beautiful night for soccer in the Upstate. The teams went to intermission with AU holding a 4-0 advantage, but the Lions quickly cut into that lead shortly after the break, as AU was called for a hand-ball in the box, giving the visitors a penalty kick. Mars Hill sophomore Rury Caulfield took advantage by rocketing a shot past AU goalie Benjamin Pepion for the Lions' sole score of the contest. "We had a lot of guys step up and contribute tonight," said Anderson head coach Rob Miller. "We scored some really nice goals and it's great to win at home. Anytime you score six goals it's a real positive." Samson and Passini each recorded two scores, while Markland and Lasse Sohrweide each notched a goal. Next up for the Trojan's is a matchup against Francis Marion at the AU Soccer Field with kickoff slated for 7 p.m.
