Men's Soccer Suffers First Setback of Season

MISENHEIMER, N.C. -- Using two goals in the final 12 minutes of action, Pfeiffer upended Anderson, 2-0, in Conference Carolinas men's soccer action Saturday afternoon at N.E. Lefko Field. Pfeiffer moved to 5-3 on the season and 3-1 in conference play while the 11th-ranked Trojans suffered their first setback of the campaign, dropping to 6-1-1 overall and 2-1-1 in the conference. Senior Paulo Passini narrowly missed an opportunity to put the Trojans on the scoreboard first, but his shot in the 75th minute bounced off the crossbar and 14 seconds later his follow-up sailed high. On the ensuing counterattack, the Falcons Fahret Salihovic scored the game-winner in the 78th minute and just more than four minutes later, Pfeiffer posted an insurance goal on Renato Barbosa's score that ricocheted off the crossbar and behind AU keeper Benjamin Pepion. Anderson would put a couple of early shots on goal in the contest, the first coming from Mark Smith and then Ryan Messick, but were unable to convert. Pepion recorded four saves on the afternoon, while the Trojans forced Pfeiffer's Alex Moreno to collect seven saves. AU held a 10-4 advantage in corners, but the Falcons outshot the Trojans, 14-13. "It was a frustrating afternoon," said Anderson head coach Rob Miller. "We didn't capitalize on our opportunities and [Pfeiffer] did. It's tough to win on the road and they're a good team - maybe the best offensive team we've faced all year." Anderson will get back on the pitch Wednesday, Sept. 30, when the Trojans play host to Belmont Abbey in a brief one-match conference homestand. Kick-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. at the AU Soccer Field.
