ANDERSON, S.C. -- Newberry used a quick strike in each half to slip past Anderson, 4-1, in women's soccer action Wednesday night at the AU Soccer Field. Newberry (9-3-1), which stands atop of the South Atlantic Conference standings, struck in the third minute of action when the Scarlet and Grey's Amberly Fowler found the back of the net off a corner kick from teammate Sara Geisman. "We can't win games when we give up goals in the first five minutes of both halves," said Anderson head coach Jason Dowiak. Anderson (3-8), threatened at the 15.53 mark when Adrienne Lough's corner kick found its way in front of the Newberry net and again just two minutes later, but the Trojans were unable to capitalize on their chances. The AU defense stiffened for the remainder of the opening half and the Trojans threatened again when Ashley Cotton closed in on Newberry keeper Emily Rhoades in the 28th minute, but was turned away before firing a shot. But Anderson continued to pressure and got on the scoreboard with less than four minutes before intermission when freshman Joelle Purinton netted the equalizer following a flurry of activity in front of the Newberry net. Jessica Kleinberg began the outburst with a shot that was blocked and was followed quickly as Carrie Settle fired a shot off the carom. Newberry answered with offense of its own as AU keeper Alyssa Stephens stopped an attempt at the 42:48 mark and a shot 41 seconds later grazed the right post and the two teams went to the break knotted at one apiece. The NC duo of Geisman and Fowler teamed up again less than two minutes into the second frame as Fowler registered the game-winner. Next up for the Trojans is a Saturday afternoon Conference Carolinas matchup versus Lees McRae at the AU Soccer Field, with kick-off slated for 5 p.m. in the first match of a women's/men's doubleheader.
