Crusaders Cruise Past Anderson

ANDERSON, S.C. -- Belmont Abbey jumped out to a 34-9 lead in the first 11 minutes of the game and went on to post a 90-60 victory over Anderson University in a Conference Carolinas game Monday night at the Abney Center. Belmont Abbey, 8-6 overall and 7-1 in the conference, shot 66 percent from the field in the first half to build a 53-28 halftime lead. In the second half, Anderson never got closer than 24 points. The victory keeps Belmont Abbey in first place in the Conference Carolinas standings. The Crusaders placed five players in double figures. Richard Barbee scored 19 points, Jonathan Jackson tallied 14, and Ric Marczenko, Chad Patus, and Karolis Bauza all scored 10 points apiece. Barbee was 8-for-10 from field and also had four assists and four steals. Belmont Abbey scored 25 points off 17 Anderson turnovers, and the Crusaders scored 40 points in the paint. Anderson, 5-9 and 3-4, was led by Brandon Young and Jarret Johnson with 10 points apiece. The Crusaders had 23 assists on 30 baskets. Patrick Kuhlman had seven of the Crusader assists. The loss drops Anderson to 5-9 overall and 3-4 in the conference. Anderson now has a week off before playing host to Erskine Jan. 21 at the Abney Center.
