Chiles Named CVAC Female Athlete Of The Year

THOMASVILLE, N.C. -- Sophomore LaShonda Chiles of Anderson College and junior Casey Smith from Erskine College are the 2004-05 Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference Female and Male Athletes of the Year as voted on by the conference athletics directors. This prestigious award is presented annually to both a male and a female student-athlete in recognition of their athletic contributions and achievement. Chiles continues to be recognized for her outstanding sophomore season as the 2005 CVAC Female Athlete of the Year. Chiles, a 5-foot-2 sophomore from Greenwood, S.C., led Anderson College to a record of 33-3, a 23-game winning streak, a top-five national ranking in the USA TODAY/ESPN/WBCA Division II Coaches' poll, and a No. 1 ranking in the East Region. Chiles averaged 22.8 points, 4.7 rebounds, 5.0 assists, and 2.6 steals per game. She scored in double figures in all of Anderson's 36 games, and she scored 20 or more points 26 times. Her high game was 41 points against Queens University of Charlotte on Feb. 7. She handed out five or more assists in 19 games. She shot 42 percent from the field, 36 percent from behind the arc, and 78 percent from the free throw line. During the 2004-05 season, Chiles had 181 assists against 84 turnovers for a sparkling assist-to-turnover ratio of 2.15 to 1. For her career, Chiles has 297 assists against 160 turnovers. She was named first-team All-CVAC, CVAC Player of the Year, MVP of the CVAC Conference Championship Tournament, first-team All-East Region, second-team Daktronics All-American, and honorable mention Kodak WBCA All-American. She is the first Anderson women's basketball player in the Division II era to earn All-American honors. She also was named to the All-East Region team after leading the Lady Trojans to the East Regional final against Charleston (W.Va.). In Anderson's three NCAA Tournament games, Chiles averaged 25 points per game. Chiles was an extremely durable player during the '04-05 season. She averaged 36.4 minutes per game and played the full 40 minutes in nine games. In two seasons at Anderson, Chiles has scored 1,400 points. She set the school single-season scoring record as a sophomore with 822 points. Chiles is the first Anderson College athlete to earn the CVAC Athlete of the Year honor. Casey Smith of Erskine College placed another feather in his cap by being named the 2005 CVAC Male Athlete of the Year. In just three seasons, the Marietta, Ga., native helped the Flying Fleet to 100 wins, including a second place CVAC finish in 2005. As a junior, he rewrote the Erskine College baseball record books, with career records of 42 home runs, 193 RBI, 64 doubles, 423 total bases and his .401 career batting average. During the 2005 season, Smith helped Erskine become one of the top offenses in the country, as he finished the season in the NCAA DII top 15 in six different offensive categories; 3rd in RBI per game (1.51), 4th in doubles per game (0.51), 5th in slugging percentage (.844), 9th in batting average (.448), 9th in homeruns per game (0.33), and 14th in runs per game (1.25). Casey was well recognized for his outstanding junior season, being named first team All-CVAC and the first Erskine baseball player to be named CVAC Player of the Year. Smith was also named first team All-South Atlantic Region and South Atlantic Region Player of the Year, first team All-American by both the American Baseball Coaches Association and the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association. Smith topped that by being named the NCAA Division II National Player of the Year by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association. These achievements were all first firsts for the Erskine College baseball program. Casey wrapped up the year becoming the first Erskine baseball player to be drafted since 1993 when the San Diego Padres took him in the ninth round last week in the Major League Baseball Draft.
