Lady Trojans Take Over In Second Half

ANDERSON, S.C. -- No. 5 Anderson College outscored Limestone 37-20 in the first 12 minutes of the second half and went on to post a 91-74 victory over the Saints Monday night at the Abney Center. Anderson, 27-2 overall and 18-1 in the CVAC, has won 17 straight. Limestone drops to 4-21, 4-15. Anderson was led by sophomore LaShonda Chiles, who scored a game-high 26 points, 19 in the second half. Chiles has scored in double figures in every game this season, and she has led the Lady Trojans in scoring in seven of their last eight games. Chiles also had 10 assists for her second double-double of of the season. Chiles has scored 106 points in Anderson's last four games. After two ties and one lead change in the first two minutes, Anderson took the lead for good. But the Saints kept in close in the first half. A field goal by Stephanie Ponds gave Anderson a 24-14 lead at the 11:25 mark, but Limestone used a 10-2 late in the half to cut the Anderson lead to 34-32 with three minutes remaining. Anderson led 38-32 at the half. Four minutes into the second half, the Lady Trojans started pulling away. A 27-12 run during a span of eight minutes gave Anderson a 75-52 lead with 8:14 to play. Anderson closed the run with 11 points, five by Chiles. Anderson's largest lead was 27 points -- 87-60 -- with 2:54 to play. Deanna Thompson, one of three seniors playing in their final regular-season home game, scored 23 points, Ponds added 15 points and 10 rebounds for her 14th double-double of the season; and senior Shemika Reed tallied 10 points. Senior Nicole Beasley, who had not played all season because of a back injury, played seven minutes and made a 3-point basket with 43 seconds remaining in the game. Thompson, Reed, and Beasley have helped lead Anderson to 84 victories in the last four seasons, which have included a CVAC Tournament championship and an NCAA trip. Limestone was led by Tiffany Jones with 17 points. Anderson shot 47 percent to 46 percent for Limestone. The Lady Trojans won the boards, 45-35. In the last 44 games they have scored 80 or more points, the Lady Trojans are 44-0. Anderson is now 13-0 against schools from the state of South Carolina this season and finished its home schedule 13-1 at home.
