Lady Trojans Rally To Reach East Region Final

ANDERSON, S.C. -- Anderson College rallied from a 12-point deficit in the second half to beat Fairmont State, 90-77 and reach Monday night's East Region final. Anderson, 33-2 overall and 16-1 at home, trailed 61-49 with 14:29 to play, but the Lady Trojans went on a 23-11 run to create the first tie of the game at 72 with seven minutes remaining. Latrice Thomas scored seven points during the run and LaShonda Chiles provided the tying basket with a 3-pointer from the top of the key. "Our game plan was to extend our defense, but we didn't execute in the first half," said Anderson head coach Kevin Pederson. "We executed better in the second half." After Kristen Gattuso made one free throw to give the Falcons a 73-72 lead with 6:13 remaining, Anderson went on an 8-0 run for an 80-73 lead with 2:33 remaining. Thomas scored six of the eight points. The Falcons, who finish their season at 28-4, got within three -- 80-77 -- with 1:55 remaining, but the Lady Trojans made eight free throws in the final 1:13 to lock up their 23rd consecutive victory. Anderson will face giant killer Charleston, W.Va., in the regional final at 7 p.m. Monday. The Golden Eagles (28-4) knocked out defending national champion California, Pa., 98-81. The winner of Monday night's game advances to the Elite Eight in Hot Springs, Ark., Mar. 23-26. In the first half, Fairmont State put on a superb shooting exhibition. Ashley Reed was 5-for-8 from behind the arc and Kristen Gattuso was 3-for-6 from behind the arc to help the Falcons hang on to the lead the entire first half. A putback bucket by Stephanie Ponds with two seconds remaining cut the Fairmont halftime lead to 43-38. "We were in a better attack mode in the first half," said Fairmont State head coach Steve McDonald. "I think we still had it the first 10 minutes of the second half. Then I don't know if something kicked out for us or something kicked in for Anderson. The last 10 minutes we didn't play with the same level of confidence." Pederson credited Anderson's press defense, which gained even more energy with the sellout crowd in the Abney Center cheering every move. "We want to stick with our press," Pederson said. "We believe it affects teams not only physically but mentally. The press can be beaten but it wears on you." Anderson was led by LaShonda Chiles, who scored 30 points. Chiles, a 5-2 sophomore from Greenwood, S.C., 8-for-15 from the field and 11-for-13 from the free throw line. Chiles has now scored in double figures in 44 consecutive games and she has scored 30 or more points four times this season. Chiles' 11 made free throws is a season high for an Anderson player. Thomas, a freshman from Graniteville, S.C., came off the bench to score 22 points. Thomas was 7-for-10 from the field and 7-for-7 from the free throw line. Ponds contributed her 17th double double of the season -- 20 points and 12 rebounds. Fairmont was led by Gattuso, who had a game-high 32 points and Reed, who finished with 23. Fairmont outscored Anderson, 36-15 from behind the arc, but Anderson scored 20 more points at the free throw line -- 27-7. The Lady Trojans were 27-for-30 from the stripe. The 27 made free throws is a season high. The previous high was 26 versus Queens (N.C.) on Mar. 2. Anderson also dominated the glass, 44-26. Anderson averaged 1.29 points per possession. In the last 49 games they have scored 80 or more points, the Lady Trojans are 49-0. Anderson scored 90 or more points 20 times this season and 10 of its last 13 games.
