Lady Trojans Suffocate Fleet To Reach CVAC Final

GAFFNEY, S.C. - CVAC Player of the Year LaShonda Chiles scored 22 points and Anderson College limited Erskine College to 26 percent shooting from the floor to eliminate the Flying Fleet 67-43 in the semifinal round of the 2005 CVAC Tournament Friday afternoon at the Timken Center at Limestone College. Anderson, 30-2 overall, advances to Saturday's 2 p.m. championship game against Belmont Abbey, an 89-59 winner over Barton in the other semifinal. Erskine ends its season at 17-12. The victory was Anderson's 20th in a row and marks the first time the Lady Trojans have won 30 games as a member of NCAA Division II. Anderson, ranked No. 2 in the East Region and No. 5 in the Division II WBCA poll, will be playing in its second consecutive CVAC Tournament championship game. The Lady Trojans beat Coker 78-63 in the '04 tournament championship game at Due West, S.C. Anderson's victory coupled with East Region No. 1 Charleston's 63-42 loss to Glenville State Friday afternoon opened up the possibility for Anderson to be the host school for next weekend's NCAA East Regional. Anderson's lead never dipped below double digits the remainder of the game. Chiles capped Anderson's opening burst with a three-point play at the 12-minute mark. After Chiles' three-point play, Anderson scored just one field goal in the final eight minutes of the first half. Erskine scored three baskets in the final 2:08 to cut Anderson's halftime lead to 32-21. Anderson opened the second half with a 10-4 run for a 45-25 lead with 14:31 left. The Lady Trojans pushed their lead over 30 points for the first time with a 14-5 run starting at the 9:56 mark. Stephanie Ponds and Shemika Reed scored two baskets apiece during the run. Ponds finished with 16 points and eight rebounds in 22 minutes. Reed recorded her third double-double of the season - 12 points and 10 rebounds. Deidra Langston was the fourth Lady Trojan in double figures with 11. Deanna Thompson had six of Anderson's 15 assists. Lisa Jackson was the lone Erskine player in double figures with 11 points. Jackson also had a game-high 14 rebounds. Anderson shot just 38 percent from the field but limited Erskine to less than 30 percent in both halves. In the two regular-season meetings against Anderson, the Fleet made 25 of 45 shots from behind the arc. Friday, Erskine made just 3 of 19 from 3-point range. The Fleet scored just 18 baskets in the game. Erskine committed 20 turnovers that led to 19 points for Anderson.
