Lady Trojans Blow Past Queens In Second Half

ANDERSON, S.C. -- Anderson College outscored Queens University of Charlotte 37-9 in the first nine minutes of the second half and went on to post a 110-73 victory over the Royals in the quarterfinal round of the 2005 CVAC Tournament Wednesday night at the Abney Center. Anderson, ranked No. 5 in the WBCA poll and No. 2 in the East Region, won its 19th straight game to improve its record to 29-2. Anderson, the CVAC regular-season champion, has scored 100 points or more seven times this season, three times against Queens. The Lady Trojans have scored 90 or more points in eight of their last nine games. The loss ends Queens' season at 8-20. Anderson advances to the semifinals Friday at Limestone College in Gaffney, S.C. Five Anderson players scored in double figures. LaShonda Chiles led the way with 24 points. Chiles, a 5-foot-2 sophomore from Greenwood, S.C., has scored in double figures in 40 straight games and 58 times in her 62-game career. She has scored 20 or more points 22 times this season. Queens placed four players in double figures. Carmelita Jimenez scored 14 points, Erinn Hayes tallied 12 points, and Shanaya Harris and Kasey Gillis added 10 points apiece. After leading by as many as 15 points in the first half, Anderson led 52-40 at the break. Anderson's pressure started to work on Queens in the first eight minutes of the second half and the sloppy ball handling by the Royals led to some easy baskets for AC. Leading by 16 -- 61-45 -- at the 16:17 mark, the Lady Trojans went on a 22-2 run for an 83-47 lead with 12:32 to play. Langston and Ponds made three field goals apiece during the run. A basket by Ponds at the 6:02 mark gave the Lady Trojans a 101-59 lead. Queens committed 29 turnovers that led to 31 points for Anderson. The Lady Trojans shot 50 percent in the second half to finish the game at 49 percent. Queens shot just 38 percent from the field. Both teams shot well from the free throw line. Anderson made 26 of 29, while Queens made 21 of 28. In the last 46 games the Lady Trojans have scored 80 or more points, they are 46-0. Box: Anderson 110, Queens (N.C.) 73 Season Statistics
