CVAC Champs: Chiles Leads AC Past Upset-Minded MOC

MOUNT OLIVE, N.C. -- No. 5 Anderson College snapped a tie at 62 with a 10-5 run in the final seven minutes to pull out a 72-67 victory over upset-minded Mount Olive Saturday night at College Hall. Anderson, 26-2 overall and 17-1 in the CVAC, won its 16th straight game and clinched its first-ever CVAC regular-season championship. The Lady Trojans, ranked fifth in both the WBCA Division II poll and the East Region poll, are the defending CVAC Tournament champions. Once again, the hero for Anderson was LaShonda Chiles, who finished with a game-high 33 points. Chiles, a 5-foot-2 sophomore from Greenwood, S.C., made two baskets and had one defensive rebound during Anderson's decisive run. Chiles also had seven rebounds, three assists, and one steal. After the 11th tie of the game at 62, Chiles made a field goal, Deanna Thompson converted a layup and Chiles made another basket to give Anderson a 68-62 lead with 3:02 left. But Mount Olive, 10-14 and 8-10, got baskets from Latoria Harvey and Shenetta Moye and a free throw from Melanie Cobb to cut the Anderson lead to 68-67 with eight seconds remaining. But Stephanie Ponds made two free throws, and Thompson made a steal and two free throws to give Anderson its final margin of victory. Ponds had 14 points and 10 rebounds for Anderson for her 13th double-double of the season. Thompson finished with 11 points. Mount Olive was led by Moye with 19 points, Harvey with 17 points, and Cobb with 16 points. Mount Olive finished the game at 48 percent from the field after shooting 58 percent in the first half. Anderson finished the game at 40 percent. Led by Teneal Boone's game-high 11 rebounds, Mount Olive won the boards, 37-34. Anderson used 20 Mount Olive turnovers to score 17 points. Anderson finished the game with 20 assists for 27 baskets. Shemika Reed had six assists and Thompson had five. Anderson trailed 39-37 at the half.
