Repeat! Lady Trojans Take CVAC Tourney Crown Again

GAFFNEY, S.C. - Anderson College opened the second half with a 17-4 run and went on to beat Belmont Abbey 85-67 and capture its second consecutive Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference tournament title Saturday afternoon at the Timken Arena at Limestone College. Anderson, 31-2 overall, got two free throws and a basket from LaShonda Chiles in the final 44 seconds of the first half to take a 39-32 lead at the break. The Lady Trojans, who have won 21 straight games, opened the second half by scoring on eight of their first 11 possessions to seize a 56-36 lead with 13:53 remaining. Deidra Langston, who led all scorers with 27 points, had three baskets during the run while Chiles and Stephanie Ponds contributed two baskets apiece. Chiles, who collected the tournament MVP award for the second straight year, finished with 26 points. Ponds added 19 points and 10 rebounds for her 15th double-double of the season and Deanna Thompson tallied 11 points and grabbed eight rebounds for the Lady Trojans. In addition to scoring 27 points, Langston had nine rebounds, five blocks, three steals, and two assists. Anderson, the regular-season champion, has now beaten Belmont Abbey eight straight times and 10 of the last 11. "I can't explain it," said Anderson head coach Kevin Pederson. "I think we've just had a little bit of luck against them. They're a great team. We wanted to limit their threes. We wanted to make them put it on the floor and go one-on-one. That was the game plan. "We're 31-2 and have won 21 in a row. That's just unbelievable." The victory moves Anderson into prime position to be the host school for the NCAA East Regional, which begins Friday. An announcement will be made Sunday night regarding the regional site and the eight schools selected to participate. Anderson receives an automatic bid for winning the CVAC title. Belmont Abbey is expected to receive an at-large bid. Anderson's inside combo of Ponds and Langston were too much for the undersized Crusaders. Langston was 13-for-16 from the field, and Ponds was 9-for-11 from the field. Langston, a 5-foot-10 sophomore from Gainesville, Ga., has scored 20 or more points in three of the last four games. Two free throws by Belmont Abbey's Nicole Woods cut the Anderson lead to 62-47 with 10:12 remaining. From that point, both teams went cold. Belmont Abbey, 22-8 overall, went six possessions with out a point, and Anderson's scoring drought lasted five possessions. Two free throws by Chiles and a layup by Langston pushed Anderson's lead back to 19 points - 68-51 - near the six-minute mark. After the two teams swapped points for four possessions, Chiles and Langston scored on consecutive possessions to give the Lady Trojans a 79-59 lead with 3:20 left. In the first half, the game went back and forth with neither team able to get more than a three-point lead until the eight-minute mark. Anderson went on a 8-2 run for a 30-24 lead with 6:17 to play. Langston scored all four baskets in the run. Baskets by Heather Schleupner, who led the Crusaders with 24 points, and Debra Wilcox pulled the Crusaders to within three - 35-32 - with 1:35 to play in the half. Anderson shot 50 percent in the second half to finish the game at 48 percent. For the second consecutive game, Anderson's defense did the job. Belmont Abbey failed to shoot better than 40 percent in either half and finished the game at 34 percent. Shemika Reed had seven rebounds and seven of Anderson's 21 assists. In the last 47 games the Lady Trojans have scored 80 or more points, they are 47-0. CVAC Tournament Championship: Anderson 85, Belmont Abbey 67 Season Statistics
