Millersville Throws Scare Into Lady Trojans

ANDERSON, S.C. -- Top-seeded Anderson College beat back a determined effort by No. 8 Millersville to eliminate the Marauders 90-79 in the quarterfinal round of the NCAA Women's East Regional Friday night at the Abney Center. "I think Millersville is the best eight seed in the country," said Anderson head coach Kevin Pederson. "They have two great post players. They played a tough game. We were fortunate to win." In the other quarterfinal games, No. 3 Charleston beat Clarion, 79-57; No. 2 California, Pa. beat Wheeling Jesuit, 78-68; and No. 4 Fairmont State defeated Glenville State, 60-57. On Saturday, Charleston will face California at 6 p.m., and Anderson will take on Fairmont State at 8 p.m. The victory over Millersville was Anderson's 22nd in a row and the Lady Trojans snapped the Marauders' 15-game winning streak. Anderson is now 32-2 overall. Millersville ends its season at 21-9. In front of a packed house, the Lady Trojans built a 10-point lead -- 56-46 -- with 14:18 remaining then survived a Millersville rally. "They came out with a defense that confused us," Pederson said. "They have a very good press with several athletic players." The Marauders outscored the Lady Trojans 26-17 during a nine-minute span to cut the Anderson lead to 73-72 with 5:24 to play. "I thought we came in and did an outstanding job in the second half," said Millersville head coach Mary Fleig. "I thought it was a great matchup. Anderson reminds me a lot of my own team." But then LaShonda Chiles stepped up and made the biggest shot of the game and Anderson's biggest shot of the season to date -- a 3-pointer from the top of the key -- to give Anderson a 76-72 lead with 5:15 remaining. Millersville never got closer than four points the rest of the way. "That's something we talked about," Pederson said. "I told LaShonda when she felt like it to take it." A 6-2 run by Anderson put the Lady Trojans ahead 82-74 with 3:31 to play. Anderson finally got its lead back to double digits -- 88-77 -- on a layup by Deidra Langston with 18 seconds remaining. Langston, a sophomore from Gainesville, Ga., led all scorers with 28 points. Stephanie Ponds added 25, Chiles scored 18, and Deanna Thompson tallied 14. Langston was 9-for-14 from the field and 10-for-13 from the free throw line. Ponds and Langston both had 11 rebounds apiece. Ponds now has 16 double doubles this season, and Langston has nine. "Ponds surprised us in the post," Fleig said. "We didn't expect her to turn around and make those shots." Chiles, a sophomore from Greenwood, S.C., has now scored in double figures in 43 consecutive games. Millersville was led by Danielle Marshall with 25 points, Jayeneca Bailey with 16 points, and Kristy Garner and Destinne Parker-Stewart with 13 points apiece. Anderson shot better than 50 percent from the field in both halves to finish the game at 52 percent. Millersville shot 46 percent from the field. Anderson had 22 assists on 35 baskets. Thompson and Shemika Reed had five assists apiece for the Lady Trojans. Thompson, a senior from Summerville, S.C., also had six of Anderson's 15 steals. Both teams showed first-round NCAA jitters -- Millersville comitted 22 turnovers and Anderson committed 21. In the last 48 games the Lady Trojans have scored 80 or more points, they are 48-0. The Lady Trojans are now 15-1 at home this season. "Now I'm ready to play," Ponds said. "I want to defend our home court at all costs." Next up for Anderson is Fairmont State (28-3). "It was a tough game," Pederson said. "I thought we matched up well with them. Now, it's a clean slate and we've got to be ready to go tomorrow."
