Chiles Named Second Team All-American

MIAMI SHORES, Fla. -- LaShonda Chiles of Anderson College was named the to the Daktronics NCAA Division II Women's All-America second team selected by members of the College Sports Information Directors of America Monday night. Chiles, a 5-foot-2 sophomore from Greenwood, S.C., led Anderson to a 33-3 record, a No. 4 national ranking, and a No. 1 ranking in the East Region. She averaged 22 points per game and was named CVAC Player of the Year, the MVP of the CVAC Tournament, and to the All-East Regional team. In two seasons at Anderson, Chiles has scored 1,400 points. Candice Allen of Cal Poly Pomona was tabbed as the Player of the Year on the Daktronics team. Allen led Division II in scoring for the second straight season, averaging 28.3 points per game, earning her second straight First-Team All-America award. She was the California Collegiate Athletic Association Player of the Year, leading the league in scoring and second in steals. She led the Broncos to the semifinals of the West Region Tournament. Allen is the second Bronco to earn Player of the Year honors. Lauri McIntosh earned the award in 2002. Joining Allen on the first team are Carone Harris of Central Arkansas, Lindsey Dietz of Minnesota-Duluth, Erika Quigley from St. Cloud State and Florida Southern's Lucresia West. The 2005 All-America team has three repeat selections in addition to Allen. Harris was a second-teamer in 2003, while Dietz earned a spot on the third team and West was on the second team in 2004. Harris led the Sugar Bears to the NCAA Division II Elite 8, earning All-Tournament at the South Region Championship. Dietz was second in the North Central Conference in scoring and rebounding, carrying the Bulldogs to the semifinals of the of the North Central Region Tournament. The Bulldogs fell in the semifinals to Huskies of St. Cloud State, led by Quigley. Quigley, who went on to lead the Huskies to the Elite 8, led the NCC in scoring and rebounding, becoming one of only two sophomores to earn All-America honors this season. West rounds out the First-Team after earning Sunshine State Conference Player of the Year honors, leading the league in scoring and rebounding. The second team is comprised of Childs, Kim Abts, the nations' assist leader, from Chico State, number one-ranked Shaw's Kiarsha Curtis, Kristen Gattuso of Fairmont State and Sara McKinney of California (Pa.). Rounding out the All-America squad are third team members Aesha Carter of Henderson State, Amanda Newton from Drury, Grand Valley State's Nikki Reams, Philadelphia's Samara Speakes and Natalja Tsurbakova of Angelo State. Honorable mention goes to Kristi Boese of North Dakota, Michelle Bruns from Southwest Minnesota State, Shevon Gibbons, Bentley, Shonda Holder of Queens (N.Y.), Charleston's Lisa Lee, Katie McElree from Cal State Bakersfield and Melissa Patterson of Pitts-Johnstown. Dietz was selected as the Women's Basketball Academic All-America of the Year in the College Division. Tsurbakova made the third-team Academic All-America, while Patterson also made the first-team and Bruns was a second-teamer. Harris, Quigley, Reams and Lee all carried their teams to the Elite 8. In addition to Allen (scoring--28.3) and Abts (assists--9.7), Harris led the nation in steals at 5.5 per game.
