Anderson Set To Meet Charleston To Decide Title

ANDERSON, S.C. -- Anderson College will meet Charleston (W.Va.) for the NCAA Women's Division II East Regional title Monday night at the Abney Center. Tip-off for the game is set for 7 p.m. A capacity crowd is expected. The winner of Monday night's game will receive a trip to the Elite Eight in Hot Springs, Ark., Mar. 23-26. Anderson, 33-2 overall and the No. 1 seed in the tournament, beat Millersville, 90-79 in the first round and Fairmont State, 90-77 in the semifinals. The Lady Trojans are the winningest team in the country and they have the nation's longest winning streak at 23 games. Charleston (28-4), the No. 3 seed in the tournament, beat Clarion, 79-57 in the first round then pulled off the biggest upset of the tournament in the semifinals by ousting defending national champion California (Pa.), 98-81. The tournament statistics between the two teams are close. In the first two games, Anderson has made 54 field goals, while Charleston has made 50. Charleston has made one more field goal from behind the arc and two more free throws than Anderson. The Golden Eagles have nine more rebounds -- 91-82 -- than the Lady Trojans. One of the biggest differences is in turnover margin. Anderson is plus 1.5, while Charleston is minus six. Another big difference is in the points allowed category. Charleston is allowing nine less points per game in the tournament (69.0) than Anderson. Anderson has three of the top 10 scorers in the tournament. LaShonda Chiles, who has scored in double figures in 44 consecutive games, is the tournament's fourth-leading scorer at 24.0 points per game. Joining Chiles in the top 10 are Stephanie Ponds (22.5, 6th) and Deidra Langston (18.0, 10th). Chiles, a sophomore from Greenwood, S.C., scored 30 points in Anderson's semifinal victory over Fairmont State. Ponds, a sophomore from Bethune, S.C., is 19-for-26 from the field in the tournament for a scorching 73.1 percent. Charleston's Lisa Lee is the third-leading scorer in the tournament at 25.0 points per game.
