Trojans Advance In CVAC Tournament

ANDERSON, S.C. -- Josh Pittman scored on a breakaway at 66:08 to give Anderson College a 1-0 victory over St. Andrews Presbyterian in the first round of the 2005 CVAC Tournament Wednesday night at Smethers Field. The victory, Anderson's first ever in the CVAC Tournament, improves the Trojans to 9-8-2 and advances them to Saturday's semifinal round at Belmont, N.C. The Trojans will face Belmont Abbey, a 3-0 victor over Lees-McRae, in the semifinals. The loss ends St. Andrews' season at 9-8-1. In 180 minutes against Anderson this season, St. Andrews was outscored 5-0. After a scoreless first half that saw little attack from either side, Pittman got a breakaway in the 51st minute, but St. Andrews goalkeeper Nick Stevens made the save. Fifteen minutes later, Pittman got another chance when he ran down a long pass from Clint Gillis. Pittman, a sophomore from Augusta, Ga., split two defenders and scored to give the Trojans a 1-0 lead. The best opportunity for the Knights came in the 81st minute when Hylton Davis fired a shot from 15 yards that Anderson goalkeeper Jack Ward knocked up in the air then batted over the cross bar. Anderson had 14 shots to nine for St. Andrews. Stevens made six saves, while Ward made four saves. Both teams were whistled for 20 fouls. Anderson College Men's Soccer Statistics
