Upset! Trojans Knock Off No. 7 Mt. Olive

MOUNT OLIVE, N.C. - Lahnden Onger broke a scoreless tie in the 26th minute and set up an insurance goal with one second left in the match as Anderson College defeated nationally seventh-ranked Mount Olive 2-0 in Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference men's soccer Saturday at Trojan Field. The victory, one of the biggest in the history of Anderson's Division II history, improves the Trojans to 6-5 overall and 4-1 in the CVAC. The loss was the second in a row for Mount Olive, which was unbeaten in its first nine matches. Neither team had a shot in the first 14 minutes of the match until the two teams combined for three shots in a span of 63 seconds. Mount Olive (8-2-1 overall, 4-1-0 CVAC) had a potential breakaway opportunity thwarted by Anderson goalkeeper Jack Ward and Bradley Carroll's follow-up shot went high. Clint Gillis took Anderson's first shot 43 seconds later, but Mount Olive goalkeeper Chris Roush made the save on the 18-yard attempt. Mount Olive launched a counter attack, but Reid Clewis' shot went just over the crossbar. Anderson got on the scoreboard when Will Van Nostrand's service led Onger past the defense for a shot from the top of the box. Mount Olive nearly tied the match on a service to the box in the final seconds of the half, but time expired before the Trojans could get off a shot and Mount Olive trailed 1-0 at halftime. Mount Olive outshot Anderson 7-2 in the first half. Mount Olive had another chance to tie the match early in the second half, but Matt Hobbs' shot from 25 yards out deflect out of bounds off the post. The Trojans took five shots in the second half before Anderson had its next shot. Anderson appeared headed to a two-goal lead on a breakaway in the 79th minute, but Mount Olive goalkeeper Chris Roush came off his line and stopped Van Nostrand's shot just inside the top of the box. Mount Olive pushed the entire defense forward for one last attack in the final seconds, but Onger cleared the ball and Van Nostrand beat Roush to the ball at midfield to score an empty net goal with one second remaining. Mount Olive outshot Anderson 12-6 for the match. Roush finished with three saves for Mount Olive, while Ward had four saves for Anderson. Mount Olive entered the match ranked No. 1 in the Southeast Region, while Anderson was ranked No. 10. Earlier this week, Mount Olive fell 1-0 at nationally 24th-ranked UNC Pembroke.
