Trojans Overwhelm Barton, 4-2

ANDERSON, S.C. -- Anderson College jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first 48 minutes and then turned away a Barton comeback to beat the Bulldogs 4-2 in a Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference match Saturday afternoon at Smethers Field. The victory, Anderson's first-ever over Barton since joining the CVAC in 1999, improves the Trojans to 2-4 overall and 1-0 in the CVAC. Barton is now 1-3, 0-1. Tolu Popoola opened the scoring for Anderson at the 5:10 mark when he knocked home a rebound off a shot by Michael Zion. The goal was Popoola's fifth of the season. Lahnden Onger made it 2-0 Anderson at the 25:52 when he took a pass from Steve Henderson and scored his second goal of the season. Anderson's lead increased to 3-0 when Clint Gillis scored on a 22-yard shot off a restart at 47:32. At that point, the Bulldogs turned up their offensive intensity and cut Anderson's lead to 3-2. Hector Bermudez scored on a break away at 58:26 and Desmon Andre scored on a penalty kick at 73:34 after AC goalkeeper Jack Ward was given a yellow card for tripping in the box. But four minutes later, Anderson got an insurance goal when Barton goalkeeper Matt Coble fumbled a ball played by Popoola and Will Van Nostrand punched the ball through Coble's legs for Anderson's final goal. Anderson outshot Barton, 18-7. Ward made four saves to pick up the victory in goal. Anderson College Men's Soccer Statistics
