HARDEEVILLE, S.C. – Paced by freshman Anna Freeman's two-day 2-over-par 146, the Anderson women's golf team won the Pfeiffer Invitational by one stroke over Newberry after leading the two-day event wire-to-wire. The tourney was hosted by the Falcons at the 5,800 yard, par-72 Hilton Head Lakes Golf Club.
The Trojans posted a school-record 295 in Monday's first round and followed up with their third-best round of the year, while claiming their second championship of the year.
AU held off Newberry for the title after the Wolves posted the day's third-lowest round, while Erskine finished 15 shots further back in third place. Mars Hill jumped from seventh place to finish fourth, with Randolph-Macon claiming fifth place. Bridgewater and Stevenson finished in a tie for sixth, while Pfeiffer, Sandhills, Simpson and Emory & Henry finished out the 11-team field.
Freeman notched her second 1-over-par 73 in as many days to catch Pfeiffer's Meghan Holbrooks, who led the chase for individual medalist honors after Monday's opening round, but Holbrooks held off both Freeman and Newberry's Johana Lunackova in a two-hole playoff for the title.
Junior Tiffany Elam (73-75=148) shared fourth place, while sophomore Kate Hill finished in a tie for ninth after carding a two-day 150. Senior Riley Lovorn (75-77=152) shared 11th place, with junior Samantha Ellison posting a two-day 156 and claiming 16th place.
Following a three-week layoff, the Trojans are slated to compete in the Sunoco Campbell Oil Classic, which will be hosted at the River Landing Country Club in Wallace, N.C.
