KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. – Paced by freshman Anna Freeman's 8-over-par 80, the Anderson women's golf team is in seventh place following opening-round action at the Barton Invitational, which is being hosted at the par-72 5,885 yard Oak Point Golf Club.
Wingate and Florida Southern are tied for first, four shots in front of Tusculum, while UNC Pembroke is in fourth place. Limestone is fifth, with Lenoir-Rhyne one shot further back in sixth place and the Trojans are seventh.
Lincoln Memorial and Newberry are tied for eighth, while Belmont Abbey is alone in 10th. Converse and the host Bulldogs are tied for 11th place, with Queens, Catawba, Southern Wesleyan and Chowan rounding out the 16-team field.
UNC Pembroke's Madison Corley (70) was the only player to post a score below par and leads Limestone's Reme Cortes by five shots. Seven additional golfers are within seven shots of Corley.
Freeman is in a seven-way tie for 15th, with sophomore Kate Hill and senior Riley Lovorn sharing 22nd place after carding identical 81s on the day. The junior duo of Tiffany Elam (84) and Samantha Ellison (84) are tied for 35th place.
The final round is slated to get underway at 8 a.m. Sunday morning.
