Softball Team Sweeps SAPC, Finishes Third

ANDERSON, S.C. -- Senior pitchers Ashley Rogers and Stephanie Griffis both earned wins in a CVAC doubleheader against St. Andrews Presbyterian on Senior Day Sunday at Smethers Field. "We finished third this year in the CVAC at 14-6, and I am proud of the way the girls played," said head coach Tommy Hewitt. With the sweep, the Trojans improved to 25-12 overall and 14-6 in the CVAC, while St. Andrews falls to 13-31 overall and 3-15 in the CVAC. The third-place finish and 14 CVAC victories equals school standards set by the 2004 team. Anderson won the first game, 5-0 and the second game, 10-4. Rogers threw a complete game shutout to earn the win in the first game, and Griffis scattered eight hits in her complete-game effort to earn the win in the second game. In first game, the Lady Trojans scored three runs in the first inning. The big hit in the inning was a two-run double by Kayla Williams to make it 3-0. The Lady Trojans scored one run in the second on a solo blast to right field by Kasey King, and their final run came on an RBI triple by Williams in the fourth. Williams led the Lady Trojans offensively by going 2-for-3 with three RBI. Mika Tanji led the Knights with two hits in her three plate appearances. In second game, the Lady Trojans got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the first with one run, but the Knights took the lead in the top of the second using three hits and an error to make it 2-1. The Lady Trojans tied the game in the bottom of the second, but the Knights answered again with two runs on three hits and an error to take the lead, 4-2. In the third, Anderson scored three runs on an RBI single by Griffis and a two-run single by King to take a 5-4 lead. Anderson went on to add four runs in the fourth and a run in the fifth for the final of 10-4. The Lady Trojans were led offensively in the second game by Allison Cromer, who was 4-for-4 with a run scored, and by King, who was 2-for-3 with three RBI. Ashley Shurtleff was 2-for-3 with a run scored for the Knights. Anderson will play their final regular season doubleheader when they host to Newberry College Monday at 4 p.m. Anderson University Softball Season Statistics
